50mm on the 50 yard line

If there’s one thing I actually really miss about my newspaper job is that Friday night ritual of destroying my jeans one knee at a time, the battle of grainy photos shot on unreal ISO’s versus Noise Ninja, and cursing the roster for not having that one player with the number you need.

Ahhh, high school football.

I popped out to this game tonight at Booker High as a visual vacation from staring at my screen all day today.  I needed it.  I’ve had a ton of shoots lately, but with that, a ton of computer time with my mistress, Miss Lightroom.  I grabbed a 50mm and headed out.  Yes, a 50mm.

I don’t know why I never did this at the paper more, but running around the sidelines with a 50mm was a very welcome break from tradition – even though its about as traditional a lens as you get.

  1. Are there other lenses? My Leica M-3 hardly ever has a break. I love the 50mm. If I was doing Editorial and PJ, yup I’d need a bagful of lenses. I have the bag but a heart condition and age is preventing me hauling it around..
Great images. It’s all about “seeing” and pushing the button when it all looks/smells right. TY. jason

  3. These photos are really inspiring to me, and I love shooting with my 50mm, it is my preferred weapon of choice 😉 yet my shots never come out as Sharp as these! Which 50mm did you use may I ask? And your general settings… I feel like I’m asking a magician to reveal his tricks, but I am so envious!

  4. Nice work Chip. I have been doing that a lot lately. Spent half the day at Portland International Raceway with only one body, and a 50mm lens. I love how it gets me to really think about composing and timing instead of fumbling around in my camera bag. Your work is awesome.
